Terms of Use

These terms govern access to Tompkins County Criminal History. By using the site, you accept these conditions. Stop using it if you do not agree. The site is a privately operated reference resource and is not part of Tompkins County, the State of New York, or any court or law-enforcement agency.

1. What This Website Is

Tompkins County Criminal History helps readers locate public-record offices, government portals, and official instructions. It does not keep criminal records, issue certified copies, operate a government database, or act for the Tompkins County Sheriff, New York courts, DCJS, DOCCS, or any other public body. Access to agency records remains governed by New York Freedom of Information Law, court rules, Criminal Procedure Law sealing provisions, and other applicable limits.

2. Rules for Using This Site

You agree not to:

  • Violate federal, New York, or local law while using the site
  • Threaten, stalk, intimidate, or harass another person with information found here
  • Use site content for credit, insurance, employment, or housing decisions
  • Attempt unauthorized access to the site or its systems
  • Use automated bots or scraping tools against these pages
  • Disrupt service or prevent others from using the site

3. No Harassment, Stalking, or Discrimination

Information from this site or a linked service may not be used to stalk, threaten, intimidate, harass, or discriminate against anyone. New York Correction Law Article 6-C restricts misuse of New York State Sex Offender Registry data, and misuse can be prosecuted. Registry information is provided for lawful safety awareness, not retaliation, vigilantism, or prohibited decision-making.

4. We Are Not a Consumer Reporting Agency

This site is not a consumer reporting agency under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. It does not create consumer reports, credit reports, or official background checks. Neither the site nor its advertising partners offers a service intended to screen job applicants, housing applicants, insurance eligibility, or creditworthiness. You may not use information from this site or linked search tools to:

  • Make a hiring or firing decision
  • Evaluate a renter or housing applicant
  • Set credit terms or insurance eligibility
  • Decide eligibility for a license, benefit, or government program
  • Carry out any other FCRA-regulated purpose

A legally authorized check must be obtained through the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, another authorized official channel, or an FCRA-compliant provider as the law requires.

5. No Legal Advice

Site content is general information, not legal advice. It cannot determine how a charge, warrant, conviction, sealing rule, or disclosure restriction applies to a specific person. Consult a licensed New York attorney for advice about an individual matter.

6. No Warranties

All content and services are provided "as is" and "as available." No promise is made that:

  • Information will always be current, accurate, or complete
  • The site will operate without interruption
  • Pages will be free from errors or security flaws
  • Third-party search results will be complete or correctly matched

Records can be amended, dismissed, sealed under CPL 160.50, 160.57, or 160.59, or corrected after publication. Only the office maintaining the source record can confirm its current content and access status.

7. Third-Party Services and Links

Links may lead to Tompkins County offices, New York court portals, state and federal agencies, or outside services. Those operators control their own content, availability, prices, privacy practices, and terms. This site is not responsible for an external service and does not guarantee its results.

8. Intellectual Property

Unless otherwise stated, the site's original text, graphics, logos, and code belong to Tompkins County Criminal History or its content partners. They may not be copied, distributed, modified, or adapted without prior written permission, except where law permits.

9. Limits on Our Liability

To the broadest extent allowed by New York law, the site and its operators are not liable for damages arising from access, inability to access, reliance on site content, or use of a linked service.

10. Indemnification

You agree to defend and hold the site and its operators harmless from claims, costs, losses, and demands, including reasonable legal fees, caused by your use of the site or violation of these terms.

11. Governing Law

New York law governs these terms without regard to conflict-of-law rules. A dispute related to use of the site must be brought in a court with proper jurisdiction in New York.

12. Changes to These Terms

These terms may be revised from time to time. A revision takes effect when the updated terms are posted here. Continued use after posting means you accept the revised version.

13. Cutting Off Access

Access may be limited, suspended, or terminated at any time, with or without notice, including when conduct threatens the site, its users, or these terms.

14. Severability

If a court finds one part of these terms invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions stay effective. The affected language will be limited only as much as necessary to make it enforceable.
